A mixed bag of animated here's and there's from tests, try-outs and the rest of the Babanuki canon. In fact, until we landed on the more grown up title of Animation Montage it was affectionately known as Babanuki's Bits & Bobs. Broadly, I think the right title decision was made that day.

The titles were made with Hama beads which are great for making cute mosaic-type pictures that don't move, but are a bit of a chore when it comes to animating them. I did however become quite nimble with a pair of tweezers though as a result.

There's also a bit of light graffiti in there along with a similar technique I'm still quite desperate to try out; light stencilling. Much the same process as light graffiti, but using cut out shapes to create a more graphic look. Done in camera, it could be an amazing special effect if ever there was a chance to do it...

Parakeet is the name of a side project belonging to Mariko Doi (Yuck/Levelload) and James Thomas (The History of Apple Pie), and their first single Tomorrow is a noisy, slow-groove affair that clocks in at a spritely 2'20". Babanuki were asked to shoot a promo for them and we came up with a simple single-line treatment; band plays in a room that fills with smoke.

Shooting on a couple of 550D's with a pool of old school Nikons and Flemming Jetmar lighting through the fog, this was a really fun performance video to film. There's quite a bit of skinny depth of field/wide-open aperture stuff in there as well a good dose of slow-motion; all the better for capturing the unpredictable movements of smoke and a sensual performance from singer Mariko.

The location was a bit of a find too. Tucked way out of sight behind a row of residential terraces, Stoke Newington International Airport was the unlikely sounding venue for our shoot. Without a stylist, it's always a great relief to walk into a location that only needs a few bits doing to it to make it camera-ready.

One thing I've taken away from this shoot, is that smoke is a fantastic way to give a scene texture. Obviously there's quite a lot of it in this vid, but used in subtle measure it's an invaluable cinematic tool for creating a mood.

In the middle of October 2011, demonstrators across 82 countries gathered to protest against the reckless workings of what they saw as an unjust global financial market. In London, the Occupy London Stock Exchange movement was thwarted in its attempts to access Paternoster Square by a court injunction preventing its occupation. Instead, the 3000 people who turned up decided to make the area outside nearby St. Paul's Cathedral basecamp for their protest.

We'd been following the New York occupation with interest and were keen to find out what the intentions were behind the one in London, as well as who were the people making it happen. So on the first morning, after the celebrations of the night before, we went to the site and although we were met with bleary eyes at first, we found ourselves talking with some very organised and politically motivated people. The film above is the fruits from that day highlighting the humble beginnings of the occupation.

We've since revisited the camp a number of times, and there's always been something worth documenting. As it's a bit of a side project to our other work, we've been having to squeeze it in where we can, however as more episodes become available they'll be added up here.

Our second music video for Laura Marling, 'Cross Your Fingers / Crawled Out Of The Sea' had the unique proposition of being a medley. It's a bit of an odd thing to treat for, as ideally you'd like both videos to be somewhat unique, but you don't want them to be so different that it feels like two separate pieces simply bolted together. So, we thought we'd wrap the whole film in a kind of pseudo-animation style and use the location to ring the changes between the two sections.

The Perch is a very familiar location to film and photography types in London. Arranged over 3 floors, it's a large converted pub that's been decorated to within an inch of its life. Every room, nay every wall, has its own look and feel, as if an interior decorator with an extremely short attention span was allowed to run riot. It was perfect for our needs as it gave us a rich and diverse range of environments to set the action in.

Shooting on a Sony EX3 we were very keen to avoid a video-y look so we decided to try a technique that would filter the image and break it up a little, as well as add a touch of texture. Essentially, the process involved us printing out over 2000 sheets of paper from our rental laser printer and then rostrum re-shooting them. A time-intensive process, which when combined with a touch of stop-frame manipulation thrown in for good measure, meant that there was many a late night staring at and photographing an abundance of similar but subtly different images.

The excellent Ben Rogers at Glassworks matched the look and feel of the video perfectly with a nifty grade.

One of Babanuki's first music videos, at the time Laura Marling was a little known name who was still to find Mercury-nominated success later on. Our promo for 'New Romantic' uses a back-to-basics technique for illustrating the themes of the lyrics.

We were mindful of the fact that the song is quite stripped back and lays its emotions bare, so it was decided that using shadows and light would be our best approach to prevent eclipsing Laura's understated performance.

It's a simple video for a hauntingly beautiful song and with over 3 million hits on Youtube it seemed to have struck a chord or two with her following.

The London Tweed Run is an annual favourite with the diaries of cycling enthusiasts in the capital. Such is its popularity that it not only stretches beyond the M25, it's become a global event that has fans of two-wheeled transport reaching for their plus fours and cloth caps in a swift second.

Still relatively young, it has only recently invited sponsors. This year, Ralph Lauren's diffusion label Rugby is the headline sponsor and I was asked by boutique agency Pencil to create a film piece that would bring attention to both the event and the special edition line of apparel that Rugby had created. However, Pencil were keen for it not to follow the well-trodden paths of other fashion films by taking itself too seriously; it had to be fun.

So we decided to create a mock-educational film that would inform the viewer on how best to prepare themselves for the Tweed Run, in both fitness and fashion senses. Taking our cue from old public information films, we went for a simple, pared down look coupled with some silly gags for the names of the exercises.

The film features the fine musical work of Daniel Pemberton, and the lovely bike in it is a Pashley/Ralph Lauren Tweed Run limited edition that I was sadly unable to sneak under my hoodie after the shoot ended.

Password protected...? Hey, what gives?

Well, unfortunately due to matters beyond my control, this video hasn't been publicly released so I have to restrict its viewing. If however you have a work-related enquiry and this little writeup as well as the on-set images have whet your appetite to see it, then drop me an e.mail for the password. This delicate arrangement does also mean that I have to be a bit vague and sketchy about what exactly it is, and who it was made for, so instead let's concentrate on what it's about; zombies!!!

Filmed over two long nights in Epping Forest and London, the film was an attempt to turn the zombie genre on its head by partly making them the victims rather than the aggressors. Chased throughout the land by an aggressive mob, and with government bureaucrats in tow intent on curing them of their undead-ness, zombies are the bestial underclass living at the very fringe of society.

It also has some scenes where you see them eating viscera, and there's horseplay with needles too.

Bornshorts is a short film festival held annually on the picturesque island of Bornholm near Denmark. Every year a promo is commissioned, and 2010 was the turn of Babanuki to craft an exciting film to raise awareness of the festival.

Shooting on anamorphic 35mm gave us a great opportunity to make something epic, deep and thought-provoking. Instead, we made something a little silly.

Ours is fictional trailer for a hard-boiled police drama the like of which has never been seen before. DCI Brain Pierce is a battle-scarred cop who's hot on the heels of an elusive actor-slaying serial killer. Leaving a string of cryptic clues in his wake, the trail eventually leads Brian to a final confrontation with an unexpected and bizarre perpetrator.

One of Tom and I's first collaborations as Babanuki, this came about as a result of working with the creatives Jay Hunt & Pete Gosselin on some brief informational Transport for London ads. They mentioned they had this little spec idea for a hybrid Apple-style road safety commercial and asked if we'd be interested in creating it.

Alas the look is a few campaigns old now and so it will forever be a test commercial, but the idea and message is as relevant today as it was when we made it.

At the time, David LaChapelle's Rize was doing the rounds and I can remember poring over plenty of other Youtube krumping vids, but the group of dancers that we had were way beyond what we had imagined. It's amazing to be so close to people that can expertly throw their body about with incredible precision and co-ordination. By comparison, if I can make a week without stubbing my toe I feel things are going well!

You can see our TfL Check Before You Travel 10s below. It would be another four years before we got to shoot on film again!

In 2009, Copenhagen was host to the world's leaders for the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Oxfam approached Babanuki to create a campaign that would contribute to the debate and offer their thoughts on what is necessary to effect meaningful change. They also had a few famous faces on hand to help out too. We came up with an idea that made the most out of having celebrity involvement and would also hopefully make viewers laugh.

There's a lot of noise and distortion around the notion of climate change which we wanted to satirise a little, so we created two films that proposed solutions to the climate issue. One follows a sensible path, and the other treads a less sensible route. If we've done our job well, it should be obvious which one is which!

The cute animations and illustrations throughout the films were created by the very talented Azusa Nakagawa. Amazingly, given the endless list of things we gave her to draw, she still speaks to us.
